Eddie Bravo Seminar in Sydney

On Sunday 16th September, Fari Salievski  and KMA Champion Martial Arts in Liverpool hosted Eddie Bravo for a seminar while he was in Sydney, Australia.  And what a great seminar it was!!! The controversial No Gi Jiu Jitsu exponent taught a great seminar revolving around the half guard using the lockdown.

Eddie’s teaching style was amazing! His system was taught in a very methodical and structured pattern that was easy to follow and surprisingly easy to get everyone going through the motions by the numbers! The focus of the seminar was Eddie’s Half Guard system using the infamous “Lockdown”.

The format of the seminar was interesting with Eddie teaching a  Sweep called the “Half and Half” from the “Dogfight” position after starting in a “Perfect Double Underhooks Lockdown” Half Guard position. From here he moved onto dealing with what he called “Shity Double Underhooks” which was any variation that was less than perfect and how to pummel and hand fight back into “Perfect Double Underhooks” position. From here we worked backwards to learn how to get into Half Guard against someone who knows what you are doing and doesn’t want to play in your half guard. The entry technique was called the “Black Mamba” and not only was it effective as an entry point, Eddie thoroughly dealt with the most common problems and attacks that you will encounter when using the technique. Eddie finally closed with the “Electric Chair” Submission and Sweep as a complement to the “Half and Half” sweep and when your opponent is really fighting to avoid the “Dogfight”.

All in all a really great seminar, Eddie Bravo is a gifted teacher and I really liked the way the whole seminar was kind of taught in a reverse engineered pattern! Eddie Bravo definitely made a believer out of me with his Half Guard system, I cant wait to add them into my repertoire and our curriculum I look forward to his return!

One of the biggest secrets to getting good at Jiu Jitsu is perseverance! Showing up on time, all the time and ready to learn will allow you to progress in Jiu Jitsu much faster than the average student. There’s a lot to be said for being focused on your goals and determined to achieve them. Having a burning desire to achieve your goals no matter what setbacks may occur and or what obstacles you have to overcome is the mark of a true Martial Artist. Perseverance is the trait that separates the ordinary from the EXTRAordinary!

When you are tired and can think of a million reasons to skip class, but instead you push yourself  and make the effort to go to class, you will grow as a Martial Artist! The growth is in the discomfort, when you do what needs to be done even if you don’t feel like it you build your spirit. And a strong spirit is often what makes a student stand out from the rest of the group!

Perseverance is one of the most important qualities that you need to work on and develop if you wish to one day earn your black belt in Jiu Jitsu. If you train long enough you will encounter setbacks and be discouraged from time to time. You will most likely suffer your fair share of injuries even if they are relatively minor, your body will get banged up, you will be pushed to the point of exhaustion, your mind will tell you that you want to quit. Life may even have a way of throwing a curve ball at you that side tracks you from your immediate goals….

But it is the people who develop an Iron will and persevere against all odds that become great and stand out from the pack! Perseverance is a quality that you must spend a lifetime developing as it will help you in all aspects of life! It is often said that “How you do anything is how you do everything” and I believe that if you tackle your obstacles head on with a ton of perseverance then there is no stopping you! Remember a setback is only a setup for a comeback so do what needs to be done, push yourself and anything is possible!

Control, Position, Submission

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a dynamic art that is designed to allow a smaller, weaker opponent overcome a larger, stronger and more aggressive attacker through the use of leverage, technique and timing. At Jiu Jitsu Kingdom , skill and technique are what we aim to develop on the mat every day. And while we may roll hard, always looking for the “Submission“, technical skill in applying the “Submission” as well as correct application of strategy and tactics is at the core of our game. Now this may seem obvious but I often see people focus so much on “winning” the round of training or trying to hit their favourite “Submission” all the time. While doing so they often neglect some of the subtleties of setting traps for your opponent and gently guiding them towards their demise. I like to think of letting my opponent “Choose his poison” whatever mistake he makes will be the end of him. 🙂 

There are a lot of elements to  keep in mind while training, so that you maximise your chances of playing your game and getting the “Submission“, even against an explosive and aggressive opponent. The use of strategy and tactics will often allow you to surprise your opponent and cause confusion which in turn will allow you to capitalise on his mistake and get the finish, sweep, pass or escape.

Three basic ideas that I encourage all my students to keep in mind while training are “Control“, “Position” and “Submission“. They are sequential and are meant to be thought of in that particular order. A simple example of hitting an Armbar from Guard would involve the following concepts. Firstly establishing “Control“, “Control”  of the opponent’s base and posture, as well as their arm that is being attacked. “Control” of direction and momentum of the fight is also something to keep in mind. Get your opponent playing your game and you greatly increase your chance at success! Secondly “Position“, in order to apply any technique you need to be in the right “Position” to begin with. In this case the Guard (preferably closed) as a secure and stable launching platform for your attack. While utilising “Control” of your opponent’s arm you need to get in “Position” to execute the armbar (actual mechanics and technical details of the armbar). Finally we have “Submission“… The ultimate goal! In order to apply a “Submission” in this case the Armbar from Guard, we have to “Control” our opponent at the very least their arm, get into correct “Position” and finish the “Submission“.

On a deeper level, even when applying the “Submission” there is a lot more going on under the surface, that is not always visible or apparent to the casual observer. It’s kind of like the mass of the iceberg that goes unseen and is the reason why great Jiu Jitsu players are much more effective with their technique even though their game and techniques may appear simple. Higher level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players often internalize these concepts so well that when they attack they are fusing the three concepts into one. For example when Roger Gracie hits the Cross Choke from Mount not only is his “Position” from which he launches the attack perfect but his technical application of the “Position” (or technique) is also flawless. By having almost perfect “Position” he is able to really “Control” his opponent, beyond just applying that particular technique. His body combining the principles as one, also “Controls” his opponent in such a way that his timing, base and “Position” nullify his opponent’s ability to escape the “Submission“. In effect he has closed off all possible escape routes while applying his technique and is in complete “Control” of both the direction of the fight and the actual technique being employed. This level of skill is achieved through his perfect “Position” and total “Control” of his opponent making his “Submission” look both effortless and unstoppable. The same can be said of Marcelo Garcia’s Back Attacks and Mata Leon.

“Crossing Over” – Applying Your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in MMA!

I often get asked if I think Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is still as effective in modern-day MMA as it was in the early days. My answer to this is always “Without a doubt”! I mean Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gives you the tools to deal with a wild and aggressive opponent hell-bent on knocking you out in an MMA fight. It gives you options like:

 – the ability to unsettle your opponent

– draw him out of his game (i.e. Not press the attack for fear of being taken down)

– or fight more cautiously in an attempt to avoid the Submission

 If trained correctly, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to tie up with your opponent to minimise the risk of taking serious damage both on the way in and after establishing the clinch. It gives you the tools to take your opponent down to the ground, establish a dominant position and control him. And while not as many fights appear to end in submissions as they may have used to, that doesn’t take anything away from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s extreme effectiveness in MMA competition!

 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches more than just a random series of Armlocks and Chokes from dominant positions. It teaches you patience, control (both of yourself and your opponent), it teaches you about strategy and the correct application of tactics on how to overcome any opponent! It gives you a framework of reference to keep you moving towards victory in a fight, hopefully submission or KO! The basic offensive strategy in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for MMA is:

 To Enter the Clinch Safely (Without absorbing Major Damage)

  1. To Control The Clinch and Nullify your Opponent’s Offense
  2. To Take Your Opponent Down to the Mat, Limit his options both offensively and defensively and keep him down.
  3. To Establish Control of Your Opponent and Achieve a Dominant Position
  4. To Improve Your Position (Expending Minimum Energy while your Opponent Struggles helplessly and tires) and land some strikes if the opportunity becomes safely available.
  5. To Guide Your Opponent Towards Checkmate or an Indefensible Position (i.e. a position in which you have sealed off your opponent’s escapes and his only options expose him to further danger be it a submission or devastating Ground & Pound)
  6. All this while making sure to put your self in a good, safe position relative to your opponent so that he is unable to do any serious damage to you with strikes or submissions.

 This is just one example of a basic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Strategy applied for an MMA fight. Now please realise, all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not equal! What do I mean by that? Well to put it simply, if your school spend most of their time training how to jump/pull guard, flow straight into Spider Guard or Reverse De La Riva Guard  and look for the sweep and score some points then you are going to have some problems in MMA. Now that’s not to say there is anything wrong with the previous techniques or strategies just that they have a time and a place. Pulling guard, playing Spider Guard or Reverse De La Riva Guard are valid Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques, they just fit better in the realm of Sports Jiu Jitsu competition. On a side note training these skill does help build coordination, agility and mobility all of which are beneficial to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner’s development!


 Your choice of tools must be suitable for the job and generally speaking you don’t want to be on bottom in an MMA fight or have too much separation between you and your opponent when playing Guard due to the inherent risk of strikes! Again given the choice most Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters would much prefer to achieve the top position, make their opponent carry their weight, strike a little and set up their submissions in an MMA fight. The Guard in MMA is usually reserved for when your opponent takes you down, reverses you and puts you on the bottom or you are unable to take your opponent down and choose to tactically shoot and pull Guard when your opponent sprawls just to bring him into your game!

 Now while I will not attempt to tell you the “correct” techniques/ positions to use in MMA, as frankly there is no such thing as a perfect technique/position that will work every time. What I will tell you is that the best way to help your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills cross over to MMA is seek the advice of experienced Mixed Martial Arts Trainers/Fighters and ask them what they feel is important for survival in the cage/ring. MMA is different to pure Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so do your best to find out what the core basic skills are for an MMA fight and develop your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu game around them.


5 Keys To Success For Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Practitioners in MMA:

  2. Train with an open mind! You can learn something of value from everyone regardless of their style, affiliation etc Train with as wide a variety of training partners as possible!
  3. Become a Student of The Game! Learn about MMA, understand the game and what it takes to be successful
  4. Get in Great Physical Condition! If you tire in the cage it is your fault, strength and conditioning can be worked on even when you don’t have training partners and loads of equipment! Develop the ability to explode and recover as well as push the pace in scrambles!
  5. You must Train and Spar in Multiple Disciplines/Ranges, preferably two at a time to minimise the risk of injury while building MMA timing! When training your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for MMA, make sure your partners add in Strikes so that you develop a realistic idea of which Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques and positions work for you under the MMA conditions! Spar Boxing with Freestyle Wrestling takedowns and shots so that you develop the ability to strike effectively while avoiding the takedown or how to takedown a striking opponent! Spar Muay Thai and mix in Greco-Roman style Clinch takedowns and Dirty Boxing. This will help you develop skills and timing throughout the ranges while minimising the risk of injury and not overloading your senses too much at first!

“Exciting Upcoming Seminars!”

As the year flies by I am looking forward to a couple of seminars to brush up on my skills and add a few new details to my game and the Jiu Jitsu Kingdom Team! Firstly we have Gracie Humaita Head Coach, Master Royler Gracie coming out to teach a seminar at Gracie Sydney/Humaita Headquarters in July which should be awesome! Unfortunately I was disappointed to miss out on attending his seminar last year. Apparently Royler put a strong focus on competition and everyone was really impressed. A big thanks to Bruno Panno for bringing him out and continuing to build the Gracie Humaita team in Australia!

Then a little later in the year, November I think, we have Jiu Jitsu Phenoms Guilherme and Rafael Mendes coming out to do an Australian Seminar tour where they will be teaching at VT1 Gym (Gracie Sydney/Humaita) in Chatswood for the second time! Again, unfortunately I missed their seminars last year as well and heard they were ridiculously good. A big thanks to Liam Resnekov for continuing to support and host Jiu Jitsu’s top talent!

I am very excited about these seminars and hope that the Jiu Jitsu Kingdom Team are able to attend both seminars and benefit from these guys’ wealth of experience! I am a big fan of seminars as I feel they are a great way to mix up your training, keep things fresh and add a few details and depth to your game! They say “Your mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open” and I believe this completely! As a student I think the best thing you can do when attending a seminar is go in with a good attitude and an open mind. If you do this, you will learn, your game will improve and you will be better from the experience!

A great weekend for Jiu jitsu in the mma arena!

Wow! What a great week-end for Jiu jitsu in the MMA arena! Lots of great submissions by some of the top BJJ fighters around the world. It seems in recent times there as been a bit of a return towards the striking elements to please the crowds and referees are standing the fighters up quicker than ever! But like anything in life if you are not evolving, growing and moving forwards then you are dieing and the modern Jiu jitsu gladiators have evolved!

Firstly in UFC 107, Brazilian Top Team (BTT) sensation Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares put on a clinic of powerful wrestling and slick submission skills against Alliance black belt Lucio Linhares. “Toquinho” as he is commonly known is an absolute beast on the mat, powerful, compact and explosive with lethal submissions. Lucio was coming in off a five fight winning streak, none of which have gone the distance! This was a fantastic match up of two slick Jiu jitsu black belts with Lucio sweeping Toquinho (in the first round) with a beautiful half guard sweep but being reversed again instantly by Toquinho. Toquinho mixed up his attack nicely by landing a right hand on his feet, transitioning into a single leg then rolling back and underneath for a leg attack! Toquinho looking for a couple more leg attacks near the end of the round and coming close! Toquinho started the second round with a flying knee which Lucio caught and took him down with showing good balance and control from the top until Toquinho managed to sweep only to land in a tight triangle from Lucio. Palhares escaped with Lucio on top showing solid position and passing into mount! Toquinho escaped and reversed to top position before passing himself! After being restarted Toquinho looked for a takedown with Lucio going for a flying omoplata!!! Toquinho escaped and countered with a heel hook to finish Lucio! Great fight!!!

In other great matches from UFC 107 Kenny “Kenflo” Florian used strikes and takedowns effectively to confuse and off-balance the ever tough Clay “Carpenter” Guida before dropping him with a stiff right hand in the second round. Kenny then took Clay’s back and locked in the rear naked choke for the finish making this his 8th submission victory in professional mma fights! Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir impressed all with a dominating performance over rising star Cheick Kongo. Frank floored Kongo with a vicious left hook before locking in the guillotine putting Kongo to sleep just over a minute into the fight! Awesome! 

Meanwhile over in Brazil, former Pride superstar Paulo Filho put on a dominating performance against Tatsuhiko Nishizaka in Bitteti Combat 5. Enjoy the fight below and feel free to comment on the fight or post in general!
