More Essential Reading For Jiu Jitsu

June 17, 2012

Around a month ago I wrote about four books that I think are essential reading for Jiu Jitsu and received a lot of positive feedback from it. So I thought I would take a few minutes to compile another list of great books for Jiu Jitsu students, competitors and teachers world-wide. These four books are also brilliant and I can’t recommend them highly enough!

1. “Gracie Jiu Jitsu:  The Master Text” by Grandmaster Helio Gracie.

A beautiful book illustrating the classical techniques of Gracie Jiu Jitsu demonstrated by the Grandmaster himself . “The Master Text” covers all the self-defense techniques against various street attacks as well as his techniques of surviving and winning a fight using Gracie Jiu Jitsu. There is some great reading in the book as well as a discussion on the Gracie diet. This is essential reading for everyone who trains Jiu Jitsu and makes for a great gift for any student of the art!

2. “The Four Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferriss

A fascinating and inspirational read on lifestyle design. This book inspired me to quit my high paying fulltime job and start teaching Jiu Jitsu as a profession and I have never looked back. One of the best books I have ever read and very thought-provoking. No matter what you are looking for I believe you will find something of great use to you in this book!

3. “Jiu Jitsu University” by Saulo Ribeiro

“Jiu Jitsu University” is widely considered the bible of Jiu Jitsu and for good reason. Saulo explains in great detail his thoughts and philosophies of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu including his feelings on what is required for the progression through each belt level. “Jiu Jitsu University ” is another essential book for every Jiu Jitsu student’s library, it will definitely improve your understanding of the art as Saulo is a gifted and natural-born teacher of the art.

4. “The Four Hour Body” by Timothy Ferriss

Ok so two books in my recommended reading list by the same author, is he really that good? In a word, “Yes”! In “The Four Hour Body”, Tim goes into painstaking detail to explore how the human body works and how to get more from your own body! This is basically like a hacker’s guide to human performance and Tim has spared no expense in seeking out the leading experts in various fields to learn from and experiment with their thoughts and practises. Another brilliant and thought-provoking book!

So if you like reading, learning and want to take your Jiu Jitsu and life to a whole other level I highly recommend you buy these books and study them as they have the potential to change your life! On a side note if you would like read more articles by me I have started posting some here:—Leadership-and-Traditional-Values&id=7111267 . Please take a look and let me know what you think!

Essential Reading for Jiu Jitsu

May 20, 2012

For this article I thought I would take a few minutes to recommend a few good books for Jiu Jitsu students to read. If you take the time to study these books I really feel that it will help you learn and grow as a Jiu Jitsu student and Martial Artist. The following books have all been selected for various reasons and have something to offer for everyone.

1. “The Talent Code” by Daniel Coyle

This is a fascinating book on the study of genius and talent in all areas of life. The application of this to your Jiu Jitsu training, competition career or development into a great martial artist will become immediately apparent! It is such a great book that I often buy it as a gift and always recommend it to everyone regardless of their skill set, knowledge or position in life. It will change your perception and understanding of what it takes to be great in your field and really can change your life!

2. “Advanced Jiu Jitsu” by Marcelo Garcia

Does anything really need to be said about this? Marcelo Garcia is one of the greatest Jiu Jitsu competitors of all time and this book offers you an insight into some of the techniques and strategies that make him stand a head and shoulders above the competition.Very detailed and insightful, you will learn a lot about what makes Marcelo tick why and how he does what he does. A great book that you simply must have in your Jiu Jitsu library!

3. “The Art Of Learning” by Josh Waitzkin

An entertaining read into the mind of a chess prodigy who went on to study Kung Fu and even become one of Marcelo Garcia’s first black belts! Although the book makes no mention of Jiu Jitsu it is a thoroughly enjoyable read and offers great insight into the ability to learn, question, solve problems and overcome obstacles.

4. “Submit Everyone” by Dave Camarillo

Finally a book on strategy and the application of tactics in Jiu Jitsu! “Submit Everyone” is a brilliant guide in hunting for the submission. Dave treats the mat as a battleground and teaches you how to wage war on your opponent and emerge the victor! The material taught in this book is not available anywhere else for Jiu Jitsu students. A sensational book, one of a kind and hopefully the first in a series to come!

So there you have it, four of my top recommendations as essential reading for all Jiu jitsu students and anyone interested in the grappling arts! I highly recommend you make these books a part of your own personal library, you will not regret it! 🙂

“Exciting Upcoming Seminars!”

June 19, 2011

As the year flies by I am looking forward to a couple of seminars to brush up on my skills and add a few new details to my game and the Jiu Jitsu Kingdom Team! Firstly we have Gracie Humaita Head Coach, Master Royler Gracie coming out to teach a seminar at Gracie Sydney/Humaita Headquarters in July which should be awesome! Unfortunately I was disappointed to miss out on attending his seminar last year. Apparently Royler put a strong focus on competition and everyone was really impressed. A big thanks to Bruno Panno for bringing him out and continuing to build the Gracie Humaita team in Australia!

Then a little later in the year, November I think, we have Jiu Jitsu Phenoms Guilherme and Rafael Mendes coming out to do an Australian Seminar tour where they will be teaching at VT1 Gym (Gracie Sydney/Humaita) in Chatswood for the second time! Again, unfortunately I missed their seminars last year as well and heard they were ridiculously good. A big thanks to Liam Resnekov for continuing to support and host Jiu Jitsu’s top talent!

I am very excited about these seminars and hope that the Jiu Jitsu Kingdom Team are able to attend both seminars and benefit from these guys’ wealth of experience! I am a big fan of seminars as I feel they are a great way to mix up your training, keep things fresh and add a few details and depth to your game! They say “Your mind is like a parachute, it only works when it is open” and I believe this completely! As a student I think the best thing you can do when attending a seminar is go in with a good attitude and an open mind. If you do this, you will learn, your game will improve and you will be better from the experience!

Gracie Jiu Jitsu – “Women Empowered”

April 23, 2011

While working on putting together a comprehensive women’s self defense program I came across Ryron and Rener Gracie’s “Women Empowered” program. And after watching their brilliant videos I decided I just had to share them with you! Gracie Jiu Jitsu is designed to protect the smaller, weaker individual by empowering them with knowledge and techniques to defend themselves against any aggressor and quite possibly save their lives!

Ryron and Rener Gracie are extremely passionate instructors and their passion and enthusiasm for Gracie Jiu Jitsu is evident in all their material. They are great ambassadors of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and are on a mission to help as many people as they can through this great art! I urge all women to learn the techniques Ryron and Rener share in the “Women Empowered” program.

I hope  you watch these videos and share them with all the women in your life.  Who knows, the material they share may just save the life of a loved one. I believe it is our duty as a husband, parent, brother, sister, friend or colleague to help empower women and keep them safe! If you get the chance to do a “Women Empowered” course, do it and share what you learn with others. If you can’t attend one buy it and again practise and share the techniques with your loved ones!

I highly recommend Ryron and Rener Gracie’s products as they are two of the best instructors I have ever seen and are passionate in helping you stay safe through the art of Gracie Jiu Jitsu! For more information about Ryron and Rener Gracie or Gracie Jiu Jitsu in general please check out their websites:

“Lloyd Irvin’s MMA Millionaires delivers!”

January 7, 2011

Ok  so this is my first message of 2011 and I’d like to start by saying what a super fantastic day of learning I just had today at Lloyd Irvin’s MMA Millionaires seminar today! I know a lot of people give Lloyd grief and hate on him for all his marketing but no one denies that he is one of the best BJJ coaches in America and he runs one of the most successful Martial Arts programs in the world!

To begin with let me say that I have absolutely NO connection with Lloyd Irvin other than having bought several of his products over the years and have been a fan of him, his coaching methods and his ability to produce REAL results! I am not an affiliate, I am not being paid to write this neither was I asked to. But I cant help saying that all of you that chose not to come to his MMA Millionaires seminar for one reason or another are absolutely crazy and really missed out!

I flew out from Sydney, Australia paying quite a hefty airline ticket ($3500) in addition to the $697 seminar fee  not including accomodation, food and training fees. And after just the first day I firmly believe I will easily get a  return on my investment of over 10 fold in the first year alone! I mean just being surrounded by the likes of Lloyd Irvin, Pablo Poppovich, Rafael Lovato Jnr, Din Thomas, Matt Arroyo, The Singer Brothers, Greg Nelson, Renato Tavares, Marcos Avelaln, amongst many others! The ability to network and Mastermind has been outstanding in addition to the out of this world information that Lloyd has been sharing with us! And before you ask what, DON’T!!! If you want to learn this awesome material to take your school to the next level then contact Lloyd Irvin and pay for it just like everyone else!

Well I just wanted to check in and let you know that some HUGE plans are in place for Jiu jitsu Kingdom in 2011, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Stay tuned over the next couple of days and I’ll see if I can do a couple quick Q & A’s with some of the great BJJ talent around as well as some training reviews from the gyms! Again please don’t ask what I have learnt here and expect me to show you because not only can I not show it, I wouldn’t show it for anything. This knowledge will build Jiu jitsu Kingdom into a force to be reckoned with in Australia and around the world and I hope you all come along for the ride!

Anyway I’ve got to get some rest, I’m pumped for another great and exciting day of learning! Have a great day!

“Drill To Win – by Andre Galvao”

October 28, 2010

One of my students Derek, recently bought me Andre Galvao’s “Drill To Win-12 Months To Better Brazilian Jiu jitsu” for my birthday. And let me say what a great book it is!!! Andre Galvao has partnered up with Kevin Howell to produce another master text for Jiu jitsu students, instructors and competitors alike!

Andre Galvao - "Drill To Win

“Drill To Win” is a fantastic book on the fine art of drilling technique and developing functional movement skills for the Jiu jitsu practitioner. “Drill To Win” takes a step back from all the normal Jiu jitsu books which focus on a whole bunch of techniques be it for sport, self defense or MMA and takes the Jiu jitsu athlete along a different path. As the title says, the book focuses on drilling to develop functional movement skills for Jiu jitsu improving the jiu jitsu practitioner’s ability to learn and apply techniques, move more smoothly and develop the necessary athletic qualities such as strength, balance, coordination and agility that make great Jiu jitsu athletes!

If you are serious about Jiu jitsu, you must buy this book!!! 🙂 You can buy “Drill To Win” at . Read it, put it into practise and watch your game improve tremendously! Thanks again Derek for such a great gift and I am really looking forward to Kevin Howell’s future books particularly the rumoured book with the great “Terere!

“Shape Shifter – by Geoff Thompson”

May 31, 2010

Last week one of my students Richard, gave me a book called “Shape Shifter” by Geoff Thompson. Now I have been a huge fan of Geoff Thompson‘s books, video tapes(showing my age a little as videos are now ancient!) and dvds for many years and they have been instrumental in my development as a martial artist and bouncer/security professional. The theme of this book was somewhat different to what I had read from Geoff in the past but equally valuable and life changing! Think of it as Jiu jitsu for your mind! 🙂

Have you ever read a book that just made sense and resonated with something deep inside you? Well for me “Shape Shifter” was one of those books… Right message, right time and it cut to straight to the heart of becoming the person you want to be. “Shape Shifter” is a highly inspirational, and motivating book on learning how to use your mind combined with a burning desire to change your life for the better instantly! Not tomorrow, next week, next month, next year or any of the other excuses we as humans often make for ourselves but right now, this very instant! Geoff shares some powerful strategies and tactics to take you from where you are now to where you have always wanted to go in life and help you achieve everything your heart desires! I couldn’t put it down and read it cover to cover in less than 24 hours!

I highly recommend that you buy this book, read it and put Geoff‘s ideas into practise immediately! Then watch your life transform… Dont wait for others to tell you how good/bad it is or how it helps or doesn’t help them, apply yourself diligently and be the proof that you really can change your life in an instant and that there really is no limitation on what you can achieve regardless of what anyone tells you! Live your dreams, apply yourself and look forward to “The Quickening”!!!

Good luck with your training and Happy rolling!

P.S. I highly recommend that you check out Geoff Thompson‘s website and learn from one of the leading self-protection specialists in the world! I personally own 8 of his books and 5 of his videos and highly recommend each and every one of them especially for martial artists, security and law enforcement personnel!

“Online Instruction… A great training resource!!!”

November 27, 2009

The latest training resource to hit the markets is “Online Instruction” of Jiu jitsu and while “online instruction” has often received a bit of a tough wrap I must admit, I am all for it and find it to be a fantastic training resource! Of course just like anything, “online instruction” seems to vary in quality depending on who you are choosing to learn from. While I wouldn’t go so far as to recommend that you learn exclusively online, I do feel that it can really complement your regular class training and offer some great insights, techniques and tips in addition to what your instructor is already teaching you! As far as my experience with “online instruction” goes, I have recently signed up for both “Gracie University” ( and Marcelo Garcia’s “MG In Action” (

I find both to be great learning tools and each has their own particular specialty. “Gracie University” teaches the Gracie Jiu jitsu system in the exact same order as set out by the founder, Helio Gracie. Ryron and Rener Gracie (Helio’s grandsons) have set out to teach Gracie Jiu jitsu in the most highly efficient and detailed method possible so that everyone from a raw beginner right through to a seasoned veteran of the art can pick up the intricate details that make Gracie Jiu jitsu so effective and effortless! The Gracie Jiu jitsu system taught by Ryron and Rener Gracie is based on Self Defence as it was originally designed by Grandmaster Helio Gracie and can be practised by men, women and children of all ages, shapes and sizes. Ryron and Rener Gracie are passionate and gifted teachers and each lesson feels as if you were there taking a private lesson from them! I highly recommend that you sign up at, remember it’s free to sign up and you still get access to some basic material and a glimpse of what else is on offer! And while you’re at it sign up for the Gracie insider newsletter at! 🙂

Marcelo Garcia has finally launched his “MG In Action” website and let me say that it was well worth the wait! For those of you who may be interested in competing in Jiu jitsu either gi or no gi then look no further as Four time World Jiu jitsu Champion and Three time ADCC World Submission Wrestling Champion shows you all the techniques, strategy and tactics that have made him into one of the greatest Jiu jitsu Athletes of our time! Get a bird’s-eye view of Marcelo teaching techniques, explainin strategy and sparring in preparation for various competitions! There’s loads of great content and Marcelo is a great instructor! Check it out at and enjoy! 🙂

Good luck with your training and Happy rolling!

Renzo Gracie LEGACY…. My favourite documentary of all time!

November 5, 2009

I thought I’d take a moment to share with you a sample clip from Renzo Gracie’s “Legacy” dvd. The documentary “Legacy” is a compilation of training, teaching, behind the scenes and fight footage of one of the greatest Jiu jitsu/MMA fighters and teachers of all time, Renzo Gracie. Every time I watch “Legacy” the hair on the back of my neck stands up as he is such an inspiration to all of us who practise Jiu jitsu and anyone interested in Mixed Martial Arts! Renzo talks about his family, fights, training, teaching, philosophy and life lessons learned in the art! This is a MUST-HAVE dvd for everyone involved in Jiu jitsu, MMA or even Martial Arts in general!

What’s amazing is that you can pick it up for les than $20US! I cant see why someone would not buy it for that price! It’s a highly entertaining, highly motivating and fascinating look into the mind of a Legend and what makes him tick! Renzo Gracie is one of my heroes… And after watching his dvd, I’m sure he will become one of yours too!

Good luck with your training and Happy rolling!
