“Marcelo Garcia rolling with Josh Waitzkin”

January 28, 2011

Here is a video that I filmed of Marcelo Gracia and Josh Waitzkin rolling at Marcelo’s New York Academy in January 2011. I really love watching Marcelo train, you can learn so much from observing his movements, trying to understand what he is doing, how he is doing his techniques and why!

A big thanks to Marcelo, Paul, Henrique and Tatiana for being so friendly and hospitable during my time in New York. I cant wait to get back over there! 🙂
Thanks again,
Felipe Grez

P.S. Apologies for the quality of the video, I filmed it on my new sony flip camera and am only just getting the hang of it! 🙂

“A Private Class With Paul Schreiner!”

January 21, 2011

On my last day in New York, I had the great pleasure of taking a private class with Paul Schreiner. Paul is one of the instructors at Marcelo Garcia’s academy in New York. Now for those of you that don’t know  about Paul Schreiner, Paul is a world class BJJ competitor having medalled in the Mundials and Pan Ams amongst other major championships. Paul is a passionate Jiu jitsu instructor with a very technical and analytical mind for Jiu jitsu.

Paul is a beast on the mat and I was fortunate enough to experience this first hand rolling with him in Marcelo’s Advanced classes. I felt that while we were training he was able to continually bring me into his game and guide me away from my strengths which is frustrating to say the least! 🙂 I guess the best way for me to describe rolling with him is that he is very technical, tricky and likes to set cunning traps for his opponent. Just when you think you have nullified his movement, he sweeps you! And I felt that his passing game was amongst the best I have ever rolled with especially his hook exchange!

Paul is a fantastic instructor and really shines when it comes to breaking down and analysing techniques to add to your game. Paul was happy to answer any question we had and show us the very important details which often make the difference between a technique working or not, particularly at the highest levels. He relentlessly seeks perfection in his techniques and insisted that was the only way to train correctly.

One of the ideas he stressed which although simple in theory is often ignored even by high level competitors is that you never apply power or energy in a technique that is not perfect! For example if you are on your opponent’s back attempting to choke him and your opponent has his chin tucked or his hands in to defend the choke you DO NOT squeeze and apply pressure until you have set the technique correctly, that is under your opponent’s chin and clear of his hands.  You must set it in your mind that you will not apply pressure unless your technique is perfect and if you do this your technique will dramatically improve, your ability to finish will sky rocket and even if you are dog tired you will have confidence that you can finish your opponent!

I highly recommend that you take a private class with Paul if you have the opportunity! Paul is an extremely dedicated instructor and it really shows when he is on the mat. Paul was happy to go over time, making sure we understood the nuances of the positions he worked with us and due to that commitment I have been able to work several of the techniques he taught straight into my game on the mat this week! Thanks again Paul, those half guard positions are off the hook and have been working like a charm! If anyone is interested in training with Paul he can be contacted through Marcelo Garcia’s academy: . I look forward to training with him again in the future!

Good Luck With Your Training and Happy Rolling!

“Training With Marcelo Garcia In New York!”

January 19, 2011

After 11 days in the United States I am finally glad to be home! 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, I loved the business and training trip and learnt  a ridiculous amount of material in such a short time span! From learning business strategies with Lloyd Irvin and Marcos Avellan, to talking BJJ with Rafael Lovato Jr, Pablo Poppovich, Daniel Gracie, Paul Schreiner, discussing MMA with Greg Nelson, Rory and Adam Singer, Dominic Cruz, Din Thomas, and talking about Traditional Martial Arts and how to apply and integrate them into modern MMA with Cameron Quinn and so many more wonderful experiences… However my personal favourite still had to be training and chatting with Marcelo Garcia in his New York Academy!

I have been such huge a fan of Marcelo Garcia’s for many years and I was lucky to get the opportunity to train with him again for a few days! And although Marcelo is known as a legendary competitor, a lot of people just don’t realise just how great he is as a coach! Marcelo thoroughly breaks down his game and techniques so that anyone can understand the theory behind them, the when, why and how to apply his techniques with tremendous success! Marcelo is able to chain his attacks into an unending series of techniques that will catch his opponent off guard whether he uses the first or fifth technique in the series… Most of the time is opponent will succumb to his relentless pressure and technical expertise!

Marcelo offers a great program and caters to all types of people from beginners through advanced students and competitors as well as executives, and women! Marcelo’s wife Tatiana is always on hand to help out with any inquiries and jump in the class whenever any women come in to train at the gym. Marcelo Garcia’s academy is situated in New York City and a definite MUST SEE(train) for any Jiu jitsu students stopping over in New York!

The talent that come through his doors to learn from the master is incredible! On the mat at any time you have the likes of Marcelo Garcia, his assistant instructors Paul Schreiner and Henrique Rezende(both extremely technical, very friendly and helpful) and a host of other talented grapplers… For example while we were training there UFC fighter Kurt “Batman” Pelligrino was on the mats training and I believe Paul mentioned that Jake Shields and his brother were coming out to train in the next few weeks!

If you spend time on the mat with Marcelo your game will improve tremendously as will your ability to think quickly under pressure!!! You will have no alternative other than to speed up your thinking process and mental faculties just to try and survive! 🙂 His skills are out of this world and rolling with Marcelo for five minutes is worth a month of training or more as he quickly and methodically exposes your flaws and holes in your game which if you work on will help take you to the next level! I couldn’t recommend training with Marcelo highly enough as not only is he one of the best Jiu jitsu practitioners in the world, he’s also one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet!

“Lloyd Irvin’s MMA Millionaires delivers!”

January 7, 2011

Ok  so this is my first message of 2011 and I’d like to start by saying what a super fantastic day of learning I just had today at Lloyd Irvin’s MMA Millionaires seminar today! I know a lot of people give Lloyd grief and hate on him for all his marketing but no one denies that he is one of the best BJJ coaches in America and he runs one of the most successful Martial Arts programs in the world!

To begin with let me say that I have absolutely NO connection with Lloyd Irvin other than having bought several of his products over the years and have been a fan of him, his coaching methods and his ability to produce REAL results! I am not an affiliate, I am not being paid to write this neither was I asked to. But I cant help saying that all of you that chose not to come to his MMA Millionaires seminar for one reason or another are absolutely crazy and really missed out!

I flew out from Sydney, Australia paying quite a hefty airline ticket ($3500) in addition to the $697 seminar fee  not including accomodation, food and training fees. And after just the first day I firmly believe I will easily get a  return on my investment of over 10 fold in the first year alone! I mean just being surrounded by the likes of Lloyd Irvin, Pablo Poppovich, Rafael Lovato Jnr, Din Thomas, Matt Arroyo, The Singer Brothers, Greg Nelson, Renato Tavares, Marcos Avelaln, amongst many others! The ability to network and Mastermind has been outstanding in addition to the out of this world information that Lloyd has been sharing with us! And before you ask what, DON’T!!! If you want to learn this awesome material to take your school to the next level then contact Lloyd Irvin and pay for it just like everyone else!

Well I just wanted to check in and let you know that some HUGE plans are in place for Jiu jitsu Kingdom in 2011, you ain’t seen nothing yet! Stay tuned over the next couple of days and I’ll see if I can do a couple quick Q & A’s with some of the great BJJ talent around as well as some training reviews from the gyms! Again please don’t ask what I have learnt here and expect me to show you because not only can I not show it, I wouldn’t show it for anything. This knowledge will build Jiu jitsu Kingdom into a force to be reckoned with in Australia and around the world and I hope you all come along for the ride!

Anyway I’ve got to get some rest, I’m pumped for another great and exciting day of learning! Have a great day!

Good Luck With Your Training and Happy Rolling!
